This project’s programme was for a home to accommodate a young family of four with an attached full time in-law suite. The clients are acting as owner-builders, so the house has been designed to be built in two phases.
The formal strategy was to separate the main house from the suite by way of an enclosed “breezeway”, thereby providing privacy and separation for both units as well as a communal entry space. It also acts as a lock-off between construction phases.
The form of the building takes it’s cue from the mountainous topography, and is expressed through an intersecting roofline. As one enters the main house a double height space provides a dramatic view to the north face of Mt. Currie.
Passive heating and cooling is another important design consideration with the living areas oriented to the south and bedrooms and utility rooms placed on the north side of the building. A radiant concrete floor provides a regulating thermal mass while deep overhangs shade the interior and combat the extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations.
